The main differences

What the entry plan includes. Intercom Essential ($29 annual or $39 monthly list per seat, with lower prices for new customers) includes the Messenger, shared inbox and ticketing, and a public help center; all Intercom plans include unlimited live chat, support email and in-app chat (intercom.com/pricing, checked Oct 2026). Zendesk Support Team ($19 annual, $25 monthly per agent) covers email and ticketing only; live chat and a help center start on Suite Team at $55 annual or $69 monthly (zendesk.com/pricing, checked Oct 2026).

AI agent pricing. Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin AI Agent outcome, once per conversation, and Fin can also run on top of another help desk with a minimum monthly commitment. Zendesk bills per automated resolution, with 5 included per agent per month on Suite Team, then $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay as you go.

WhatsApp and other channels. On Intercom, WhatsApp, SMS and phone are pay as you go. On Zendesk, WhatsApp and other social messaging are on Suite plans with "additional fees apply".

Trials. Intercom: 14 days, no credit card. Zendesk: 14 days of Suite Professional with Copilot. Neither has a free plan.

Strengths of each

Zendesk

  • A much deeper feature set: telephony, IVR, skills-based routing and omnichannel routing on the higher Suite plans.
  • Add-ons for larger operations, such as Copilot, a Workforce Engagement Bundle and Contact Center (each priced per agent/month, paid yearly).
  • Telephony and messaging live chat are part of Suite Team, so one subscription covers several channels.

Intercom

  • In-app chat, the Messenger and unlimited live chat are included on every plan.
  • Fin AI Agent can also run on top of another help desk (with a minimum monthly commitment).
  • Higher plans add round robin, SLAs, multibrand, SSO and HIPAA support (Expert).

Decide with your own numbers

List prices only tell part of the story. Before choosing between Zendesk and Intercom, take last month's real figures: how many people answer customers, how many conversations arrived, which channels they came from and how many an AI agent could plausibly handle. Then price that month on each vendor's plan that actually includes the channels you use, adding any AI fees and channel add-ons. Repeat the exercise with double the volume, because the cheaper option at today's size is not always the cheaper one next year. Finally, check the limits that would force an upgrade, such as seat caps, workspace counts or knowledge base sites, since those often matter more than the headline price.

Which one to choose

Choose Intercom if live chat and in-app messaging are your main channels and you want them on the entry plan. Choose Zendesk if ticketing, telephony and routing depth matter more, or if your team is large enough to use the Suite's add-ons.

For a small team that wants live chat, email and an AI agent without per-outcome fees, Kora Reply includes an AI quota on every plan, with Starter at $12 per user per month for up to 6 users.
