The main differences

Entry plans are email-first on both. Zendesk Support Team ($19 annual, $25 monthly per agent) is email and ticketing without messaging, live chat or a help center (zendesk.com/pricing, checked Oct 2026). Freshdesk Growth ($19 annual, $23 monthly per agent) includes ticketing, a shared inbox, a customer portal and a knowledge base (freshworks.com/freshdesk/pricing, checked Oct 2026). So at the entry level, Freshdesk includes a knowledge base and Zendesk does not.

Omnichannel is packaged differently. Zendesk moves you to Suite Team ($55 annual, $69 monthly per agent), which adds AI agents, a knowledge base, messaging and live chat, telephony and omnichannel routing. Freshworks sells omnichannel as a separate product, Freshdesk Omni, from $29 per agent per month billed annually (freshworks.com/freshdesk/omni/pricing, checked Oct 2026).

AI is metered differently. Zendesk bills per automated resolution, with 5 included per agent per month on Suite Team and extra resolutions at $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay as you go. Freshdesk includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions, then charges $49 per 100 sessions, where an email session is a 72-hour window.

Trials. Zendesk offers 14 days of Suite Professional with Copilot; Freshdesk offers 14 days starting on Enterprise. Neither lists a free plan.

Strengths of each

Zendesk

  • A much deeper feature set: telephony, IVR, skills-based routing and omnichannel routing on the higher Suite plans.
  • Add-ons for larger operations, such as Copilot, a Workforce Engagement Bundle and Contact Center (each priced per agent/month, paid yearly).
  • Telephony and messaging live chat are part of Suite Team, so one subscription covers several channels.

Freshdesk

  • A knowledge base and customer portal are included from the entry Growth plan.
  • Higher plans add multilingual support, custom dashboards, intelligent routing and multiple SLAs (Pro), and skill-based routing, sandbox and audit logs (Enterprise).
  • When you outgrow email, Freshdesk Omni adds omnichannel as a separate product from $29 per agent/month billed annually.

Decide with your own numbers

List prices only tell part of the story. Before choosing between Zendesk and Freshdesk, take last month's real figures: how many people answer customers, how many conversations arrived, which channels they came from and how many an AI agent could plausibly handle. Then price that month on each vendor's plan that actually includes the channels you use, adding any AI fees and channel add-ons. Repeat the exercise with double the volume, because the cheaper option at today's size is not always the cheaper one next year. Finally, check the limits that would force an upgrade, such as seat caps, workspace counts or knowledge base sites, since those often matter more than the headline price.

Which one to choose

Choose Zendesk if you want one suite that grows into telephony, IVR and skills-based routing. Choose Freshdesk if your support is mostly email and you want a knowledge base and portal at the entry price, with omnichannel as a later add-on product.

If you are a team of two to twelve and want email, live chat, a public knowledge base and an AI agent in one plan without per-resolution AI fees, Kora Reply is a third option: Starter is $12 per user per month with an AI quota included. It has fewer features than either incumbent (no phone, no automated routing), and our Zendesk alternative and Freshdesk alternative pages compare it with each in detail.
